DEET versus natural mosquito repellents

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

I was reading the local newspaper this morning and my attention was caught by health information on the West Nile Virus. Health Link Canada claims that “your best protection is insect repellent with DEET. Used as directed, DEET has an excellent safety record. Products with lemon eucalyptus oil are effective for shorter periods of time”. I immediately wondered if using a natural mosquito repellent increases the risk of being infected with West Nile virus. Soothing Baby’s Teething Pains By Marco Gonzaga

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Most of all, teething can be really itchy and uncomfortable – a situation that can make your baby decidely fussy. (Read the full post about ‘Soothing Baby’s Teething Pains By Marco Gonzaga’…)

Woman first to have trachea transplanted from own stem cells

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

The success of the operation, performed in June using tissue generated from the woman’s own bone marrow, raises the prospect that transplanting other organs may be possible without the use of drugs to suppress the immune system, they said.

Alcohol Addiction Hurts Your Baby - But So Does One Drink a Week By Gloria Mactaggart

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Most women know that drinking excessively isn’t good for an unborn child, and many have heard of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) - the worst consequence of alcohol addiction in pregnant mothers. But few women are aware of the fact that even one drink a week can harm their unborn child.

FAS affects thousands of children every year. Untreatable birth defects that lead to poor memory, attention problems, impulsive behavior, and other mental and emotional issues make these children difficult to educate and raise. Their lives often turn into a maelstrom of drug and alcohol addiction, substance-related crime, and violence. Statistically, kids with FAS are more likely to die violent deaths than others.
